Catherine Gardner – On Poverty Reduction

Sept. 1st, 2010

My name is Catherine Gardner and I am running for the position of City Councillor for College Ward. One of the issues that I will be focusing on and lobbying all levels of government about, is to recognize the work hours of volunteers, in particular, those who are living below the poverty level.

There are seniors, persons with disabilities, and those caring for a family member with serious health issues who are unable to work and, therefore, are being forced to live well below the poverty level.  A number of these people remain active in their community by volunteering but they do not qualify for any of the benefits established to assist the working poor. These benefits include: the monthly $100.00 Ontario Work Related Benefit for those on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP); the Federal Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) for working poor individuals/families; and/or the Federal Disability Supplement for those who have the Disability Tax Certificate.
